Digital Mammography with Digital Tomosynthesis is a type of X-ray used to detect abnormalities in the breast tissue. It uses a low dose of radiation to capture images of the breast, which are then stored and viewed on a computer screen. Digital Mammography with Digital Tomosynthesis is an effective tool for detecting breast cancer early, which is crucial for successful treatment.
Digital Tomosynthesis (pronounced toh-moh-SIN-thah-sis), also known as digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), tomosynthesis, or 3D mammography, uses X-rays to create 3D images of the inside of the breast.
During a digital mammogram, we will ask you to undress from the waist up and put on a gown. You will then stand in front of the mammography machine, which will compress your breast between two plates. The compression may be uncomfortable, but it lasts only a few seconds. The technologist will take images of your breast from different angles to capture all angles.
At Obstetrical & Gynecological Associates of Corpus Christi, we also offer 3D Digital Mammography with Digital Tomosynthesis. This technology is an advanced form of Digital Mammography with Digital Tomosynthesis that captures multiple images of the breast from different angles. This allows for a more detailed view of the breast tissue and can detect abnormalities that we may not pick up from traditional 2D mammography.
After your digital mammogram, a radiologist will review your images and send a report to your physician. If anything abnormal shows up, we will contact you to schedule additional testing, such as a diagnostic mammogram, ultrasound, or biopsy. It's important to remember that an abnormal mammogram does not necessarily mean you have breast cancer, but it does require further evaluation.
